Wanda Yvonne Sills Evers was born on October 23, 1952 in Demopolis, Alabama. She passed away in her childhood home in Linden, Alabama on December 24, 2019 at the age of 67. She was the first-born of four daughters to Edgar Gray Sills and Evelyn Sills Chancellor, both of Marengo County, Alabama. She is preceded in death by her father, Edgar Gray Sills; her step-father, Parker Chancellor; and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, William Lamar Evers, of Milton; her mother, Evelyn Sills Chancellor, of Quitman, Mississippi; her son, Gray (Jan) Weaver of Milton; her daughter Ashley (Tony) Preston of Milton; and her grandchildren, Gabby Flores, Tailer Preston, Abigaille Flores, Bryce Preston, and Taylor Ellis, all of Milton. She is also survived by three sisters: Shirley (Dan) Etheridge, Michelle (Ralph) Griffith, and Renee (Jeff) Reinke; one sister-in-law, Arlene Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Born in Demopolis, she grew up in nearby Linden, Alabama. She attended Linden High School and received her GED in 1969. Soon thereafter, she married and gave birth to her son before moving to Troy, Alabama. She lived in Colquitt, GA for a brief time before moving to Crestview, Florida. After her divorce, she met the love of her life, Lamar, who she married in 1979. In 1988, she welcomed a daughter. Wanda lived the past 43 years in Milton, Florida where she put down her roots. During her life, she worked various secretarial & retail jobs, owned and operated two local convenient stores, and volunteered/worked at her children’s schools. But she most enjoyed her time being a “full-time” mother and granny.

If you know Wanda, you know that she truly loved all things of the sea. Her house and her clothing was always adorned with nautical, pirate, or mermaid themes. She loved fishing, family, and friends. You could always find her fishing from her dock whenever the mullet were biting, cleaning or hanging decorations underneath her house, swimming in her pool to cool off on those hot summer days, shopping in town, or volunteering at one of the local schools. She loved to host big parties at her house…many times feeding over 50 people at any given event. Wanda also enjoyed going to the dirt track races, riding through the woods, eating dinner with her family every Wednesday night, and spending the month of October fishing at Mexico Beach. She will be most remembered by her vivaciousness, her outgoing personality, and her love for other people. Wanda is greatly loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends.

Services will be held at Lewis Funeral Home in Milton. Visitation will take place on Saturday evening, December 28 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Her Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, December 29 at 11:00 am in the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel. Honorary Pallbearers are Terry Davis, Carl Howell, Terry Neustaedter, Ronnie Parker, Richard Rollo, and Carl Wells. Reverend Jimmy Pittman will be officiating the service in Milton and her nephews, Jason Griffith and Trey Griffith, will be leading the graveside service in Linden.

It is with sincere condolences that the Blackwater Pyrates reach out in sympathy to the Evers family. Wanda was truly a friend of the Blackwater Pyrates, and her presence will be greatly missed. Her generosity and support through Milton Carpet helped advance the Pyrate mission to serve our community through boater safety, historical preservation, and river cleanups.
