Obituary

Peggy DeFaye Giddens, 79, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 25, 2019, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Peggy was born in Bonifay, Florida, the third child of seven to Willis O’Neal and Vernie Lee Pridgen. In 1941, Peggy’s family moved to Pace, Florida, and began worshiping at Pace Assembly of God Church where they met the Giddens family. Peggy attended the Pace School, Chumuckla High School and graduated from Milton High School in 1958.

In 1957, she married David Royston (Roy) Giddens. She was a dedicated homemaker and active in her children’s formative years, serving as a gray-lady in schools, band mother, room mother and den mother. David’s career in the petroleum and chemical industry took them to many places domestically and abroad. In 1986, they retired to Pensacola, Florida, where they enjoyed spending time with many friends and family. During their retirement, they traveled extensively and took many tours and cruises with close friends. For over forty years, Peggy was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, becoming a lifetime member. In recent years, they moved to Azalea Trace where they enjoyed making new friends and having new experiences.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, McDavid and Gladys Giddens; sisters-in-law, Patricia “Patsy” Giddens and Jewel Pridgen; and brothers-in-law, Max Hertweck and Hank Birchmore.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, David Royston Giddens; her children, Nanette Bonte, Alissa Lovely and David R. (Kris) Giddens, Jr.; grandchildren, Ashley (Derek) Hood, Kyle Bonte, Tyler Beter, David M. Giddens, and Kalie Giddens; two great-grandchildren, Bentley Hood and Harlee Hood; six siblings, Laquita Hertweck, Paul Pridgen, Douglas (Walene) Pridgen, Margaret (Charles) Rotenberry, Phillip (Lisa) Pridgen, and Debby Creel; one sister-in-law; Gloria Birchmore; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family invites you to celebrate Peggy’s life at a memorial service on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in Azalea Trace’s auditorium (10100 Hillview Drive, Pensacola, Florida). Chaplain Jim Deitz, Pastor Don Dolence, and Rev. Glyn Lowery, Jr. will officiate. Special music will be provided by Steve McCall and Peggy’s sister, Debby Creel.

The family will receive guests prior to the memorial service, with light refreshments following. The family will gather privately prior to the service for inurnment in the Historic Milton Cemetery.

The family is grateful for the many years of care Dr. Amos Prevatt and his staff provided. As well, the family is grateful to Azalea Trace’s staff, and Sacred Heart Hospital’s second floor nursing staff for their kindness and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Peggy’s name to; the Lewy Body Dementia Association by visiting, www.lbda.org. Donation envelopes will also be available at the memorial service.
