Obituary

Col. John T. Parish Jr., 98, of Niceville, FL, made his final flight April 14, 2020. His loving wife Jean was with him throughout flight preparation and departure. Take off and climb out was smooth. As he continued to climb, four bright contrails lit the sky. Far up, they broke their line, mingling their nebulous crests that seemed to bow and nod under the calm of God.

John was born September 16, 1921 in Ponce De Leon, FL, to John T. Parish and Stella (Prescott). After graduating from the Aviation Cadet program at Michigan State University, he was accepted into the Army Air Corps to begin pilot training. During his 32 years of military service, John amassed 16,818 flight hours in 20 different aircraft types. As the project pilot for the C-141 Starlifter program, John became the Air Force’s first fully qualified C-141 Aircraft Commander. After retiring from the Air Force July 31, 1975 at McGuire Air Force Base, John returned to Florida, building a home in the Rocky Bayou area of Niceville.

John is survived by his wife, Jean, his brother Stephen Parish and sister Carolyn Gilbert, and son John (Maureen) Parish III. His grandchildren John IV, Stephen, and Madeleine Parish. His stepchildren Lisa (Gary) Fields (Jessica, Kristyn), Kimberly (Greg) Plath (Caleb, Lucas) and James (Kathryn) Barcus (Chase), and 5 step great-grandchildren.

John is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Agnes Madeleine Laird, his sisters Elizabeth Laird and Marie Meredith, and granddaughter Virginia Grace Parish.

Arrangements may be made at a later date for a public celebration of his life. Lewis Funeral Home of Milton has been entrusted with arrangements.
