William J. (Jack) Merchant, 81 of Milton, Fl passed away, Thursday, February 20, 2020.

Jack was born in Forest City, North Carolina to the late Christopher C. and Vivian Jeanette. Merchant, and was the first of their three children. He was a graduate of R-S Central High School in Rutherford County, NC and Pensacola Junior College. He retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1978 and then went on to have a second career in the Federal Civil Service retiring from NADEP in 1997 after nearly 40 years of combined Military and Civilian Federal Service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Milton and an avid golfer. After retirement he marshaled at the Whiting Field Golf Course.

Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Leigh Lane and by two daughters, Devra Denise Merchant and Peggy Merchant-Lassitter.

Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Anne Merchant, of Milton FL; a sister Kaye Harrison of Union Mills, NC; a son, William Jack Merchant (Jr.) of Huntsville Al; and four grandchildren, Jolie Paris and Ola Anya Thompson, and Karolena Paulina and Nathaniel Jack Merchant.

Funeral Services for Jack Merchant will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel, Milton Fl, with Rev Cliff Mitchem officiating. Public viewing will be at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow, at 3:00 p.m., in the Oak Grove Cemetery, in Century Fl, with Military Honors, and Lewis Funeral Home directing.

The family requests memorial donations may be made, in Jack’s name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

I have fond memories of Jack playing football at RS Central High School. He was an outstanding athlete. I have kept up with him on Facebook , and will miss his posts. My sincere condolence to his family. Harold Ellenburg, class of '59 RS Central High School.
