Obituary

Jack Omer Mendenhall, Sr., 90, of Pace, Florida, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019.

Jack was born November 1, 1928, in Topeka, Kansas. He was the fifth child of George Henry and Nellie (Clark) Mendenhall. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, Jack worked at Boeing Aircraft Corporation, Wichita, Kansas.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and retired after serving 28 years, as a First Class E6 Petty Officer. He served his country in three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was also stationed at the National Training Center in San Diego, California; USS Fabius (ARV(A)-5); COMAIRPAC, Pearl Harbor, T.H. USS Point Cruz (CVE-119); Naval Air Facility, Adak, Alaska; and VA-192, Naval Air Station, Alameda, California. He was awarded many medals including WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, ASIATIC-Pacific Theatre Medal, National Defense Service Medal and five Good Conduct Medals. He was a Naval Aviation Metalsmith, and worked at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine. He retired from Civil Service at Whiting Field Naval Air Station, Milton, Florida.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by four sisters, Jessie, Irene, Mary and Joyce; three brothers, Newell, Leo and Willard; his wife, Marilyn L. Mendenhall; and his wife, Linda Mendenhall.

Jack is survived by his wife, Virginia Burris Mendenhall; son, Jack Mendenhall, Jr. and his wife Melani of Jacksonville, Florida; his daughter, Billie Burris and her husband Robbie of Pace, Florida; grandchildren, Katelyn Mendenhall of Orlando, Florida, Alexander Mendenhall of Jacksonville, Florida, and William Chappell of Tehuacana, Texas.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m., at Barrancas National Cemetery, onboard Pensacola Naval Air Station.
